Fort Huachuca, AZ:  Fort Huachuca is located in Sierra Vista in Cochise County, in southeast Arizona, about 15 miles north of the border with Mexico. Sierra Vista enjoys an average year-round temperature of 74 degrees. A small community, with many amenities you would find in a larger city.  Within a short driving distance are the mining towns of Bisbee and Tombstone, the "Town Too Tough to Die."; In addition to local and Tucson stores, shoppers also frequent Nogales, Naco, and Agua Prieta, Mexico, all within an hour-and-a-half drive from the post.

As a Family Nurse Practitioner, you may:

  • Provides diagnostic and therapeutic management for children and/or adults with acute common illnesses and stable chronic diseases to include initiating requests for laboratory and radiological tests.
  • Making judgments about the use of medications and treatment.
  • Prescribing such medications and treatments based on protocol guidelines and in consultation with a clinic physician when appropriate.
  • Assesses real and potential health hazards and current health status, discriminating between normal and abnormal findings in the physical, emotional and social condition of patients.
  • Develops data base for individuals/families utilizing health care developmental history, physical examination, laboratory data, other diagnostic testing as indicated and pertinent psychosocial information.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner/Family Practice):

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed.

Registration: Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or territory of the United States.

 

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

 

Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.  To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which includes: ordering appropriate medications, as well as, providing physical examinations, performing laboratory studies or initiating therapeutic plans. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

 

Certification: Advanced Practice Registered Nurses will maintain current certification by a national certifying body (for example, American Nurses Credentialing Center; American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses; American Nurses Association; National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties), as appropriate, for their specialty area of practice.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.  For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
