Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Mirmar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Ranch Bernado. 1. Serves as a Physician in the delivery of Family Medicine medical care to all ages of active-duty personnel, their dependents, eligible Service Component Civilian employees and other eligible beneficiaries.

Independently formulates full treatment plans based on sound evaluation and diagnoses consistent with current and/ or evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Coordinates with facility and community resources to provide multi- disciplinary comprehensive care to all patients, taking into account factors such as new and/or emerging procedures and techniques and the patient’s personal history, as well as information gained through diagnostic tests. Applies new procedures in the evaluation and treatment of complex patient cases and conducts research for the advancement of the Family Medicine program and for quality improvement to other providers and patients. Performs emergency services or crisis intervention, including life-saving emergency procedures when necessary. Required to move, manipulate, lift patients with the assistance of other medical staff. Promotes preventative and health maintenance care, stresses positive health behaviors and self-care through education and counseling. Encourages patients to make difficult lifestyle changes to improve their heath and provides follow-up treatment and care to patients to ascertain compliance with therapy and response to treatment. Determines and provides assessments of fitness and suitability for duty and deployments of service members. Provides advice by telephone and/ or in person to other physicians, non-physician providers, and other professional medical staff on the care of patients with urgent, emergent, and non-urgent medical problems.

2. Serves as member of the professional medical staff and/ or faculty to provide advisory and consultative services on various meetings, committees, conferences, and/ or boards.

Evaluates the care provided to patients at MTF, identifies opportunities to change the care delivered, advises on difficult or complex cases, and recommends corrective action when problems exist. Participates in Quality Assurance (QA) functions, performance improvement programs, risk management programs, and peer review programs. Makes recommendations on improvement of work methods and organizational features. Develops guidelines and trainings for interns, residents, and other medical staff to follow when carrying out patient care services. Develops medical policy, guidance, and standard of care determinations within the MTF. Participates in continuing education programs to update and maintain skills. Attends and or participates in health care conferences as requested. Serve as a member of the faculty for the Family Medicine Residency Program. Involved in a wide array of teaching activities, including, but not limited to training, mentoring, and supervising residency students, weekly global supervision to a resident, teaching didactics, attending Graduate Medical Education (GME) meetings to plan and evaluate residency education and residents, and participates in teaching conferences and case discussions.

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Residency Training for GP-14 Position: Applicants must possess 4 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.

Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
