Fort Polk is an Army post located in Vernon Parish in Louisiana seven miles from Leesville, Louisiana. The city of Leesville, population 6700, is situated between Shreveport and Lake Charles. It is 63 miles to Lake Charles, Louisiana and 50 miles to Alexandria where the nearest municipal airport is located. Fort Johnson is the second largest employer in the state of Louisiana and has a huge economic impact on the entire state. The Army is situated on 198,000 acres. The Department of the Army actually owns 100,000 acres with the remaining acreage belonging to the United States Forest Service and part of the Kisatchie National Forest. The land that the post is on is both of historical and archeological value.

Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES

 

1. As a surgeon in the General Surgical Clinic, Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital, examines, diagnoses, and treats or prescribes course of treatment for patients having disorders, malformations, diseases, and/or injuries. Performs surgical procedures. Examines, establishes diagnoses, and performs surgery where appropriate for patients with surgical conditions. Assesses and plans therapy for patients in the clinic setting. Provides preoperative diagnostic evaluation, care, and coordination of scheduling for patients requiring operative intervention. Performs major surgical operations to include (but not limited to):

a. Endoscopy - Diagnostic sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, (including biopsy), diagnostic esophagogastroscopy (including biopsy), laparoscopy, operative and diagnostic.

b. Abdomen - Repair of hernias, operations on the gastrointestinal tract, stomach, gallbladder, small intestine, large intestine, appendix, liver, pancreas, spleen, esophagus.


2. Provides consultation services for members of the hospital staff for purposes of specialty area training. Provides night and weekend staff coverage for the General Surgery Service Clinic, in rotation with other staff surgeons. Provides the usual gamut of staff duties in conjunction with call, to include actual performance of surgery , as well as hospital rounds in conjunction with these patients. Fills in as needed to provide staff surgical coverage in elective or emergency General Surgery cases performed during normal duty hours when required by non-availability of other surgical staff, or to maintain operative skills in common surgical procedures in General Surgery (such as hernias, laparoscopic, chole-cystectomy, colon resection, breast, etc.).

 

3. Responsible for maintaining accurate clinical records and receiving consultations and laboratory work of specific patients.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement for Physician (General Surgery):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Residency Training:
 Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled(General/Vascular Surgery) and equivalent experience and training equal to at least 4 years. Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.
