Tripler Army Medical Center is seeking a Dental Sterilization Technician to join our growing team!

Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES

1. DENTAL STERILIZATION. Receives, disassembles and inspects dental supplies, instruments and equipment. Selects appropriate methods for sterilizing, balancing time constraints with possible detrimental effects of quicker methods. Removes gross contamination, soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids by utilizing both manual and mechanical cleaning methods, micro-biotical processes, and work practice controls (e.g. wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing and operating ultrasonic cleaners and instrument washers). Tests operation of equipment on a daily basis for effectiveness of sterilization using chemical, mechanical, and biological monitoring systems. Compares test results with standard parameters (e.g. time, temperature and pressure) and takes appropriate corrective action when deviations exist. Troubleshoots and explains the proper use of the equipment and obtains needed repairs. Stores items in such a way as to preserve the sterile condition. Conducts periodic inventory supplies, instruments and equipment and determine reordering needs. Fills requests for items based on daily schedules or individual requisitions. Suggests substitutions for items that are not available. Assemble trays and sets arranging instruments in the correct manner. Selects the correct wrapping for the tray, wraps and labels it Inspects packages for indicators of proper sterilization, aerates packages, labeling items to show date of sterilization, load number. Maintains records of processes performed. Preserves records in accordance with established policy.

2. DENTAL ASSISTING. Assists dentist provide treatments to patients. Procedures may include complex restorative procedures, oral pathology, prosthodontic, periodontic, endodontic, pedodontic, or orthodontic treatments in the dental treatment room, using knowledge of a large array of specialized instruments, materials, and dental techniques. Operates and adjusts dental equipment. Monitors patients to detect signs of shock or reactions to treatments.

3. KNOWLEDGE SHARING. Provides training, mentoring and orientation to less experienced staff on dental sterilization techniques; procedures and principles; storage/issue of associated supplies; and equipment. Prepare job aids and other tools to assist clinic staff.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements for Dental Sterilization Technician GS-0640-05:

Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. The following meet these requirements: You must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in 42 CFR Part 75 and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as a radiographer in your field.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes sterilizing and preparing dental supplies, instruments, and equipment; performing quality control testing on sterilization equipment; inventorying supplies to determine reordering needs; and assisting dentist in providing chairside treatment to patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Successful completion of at least a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as dental assistant, dental hygiene, or radiographic techniques.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
