MAJOR DUTIES
Serves as a cytologist in the cytopathology section of a reference laboratory to provide full range of cytologic services and consultative opinions in support of Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) and regional health care facilities. Determines suitability of specimen for accessioning and rendering a diagnostic judgment.
1. Renders a microscopic diagnosis on a variety of complex cytology specimens independent of a pathologist's interpretation. Over 85% of the cases received by the section are certified independently; the remainder is referred for pathologist approval of interpretation.
2. Provides direct patient care diagnostic support to clinics by evaluating specimens procured by the fine needle aspiration biopsy technique independent of direct pathologist supervision. Determines appropriate triage of obtained specimen for further diagnostic studies.
3. Supervises administrative, clerical and technical support activities of other personnel within the laboratory, coordinating workload and administrative duties. Provides supervisory level quality assurance oversight of peers by re-screening of negative smears.
4. Trains technicians and others in technique, instrumentation, and organization of work. Teaches pathology residents and physicians diagnostic cytology criteria through microscopic sessions. Instructs providers on proper specimen collection and submission. Participates in providing health instruction to providers, patients, and community groups. Researches, tests, and implements new procedures and equipment.
5. Assists Medical Director and residents with research projects. Assists in the formulation of research hypotheses and study design. Mentors and trains junior cytologists. Assures compliance with quality assurance/control and proficiency testing programs, safety standards, accreditation requirements, and departmental policies. Provides consultative cytology services to regional sites.
Performs other duties as assigned.
