Medical Technician

 Located at 10TH Medical Group Air Force Academy, Colorado.

 

We are seeking a dedicated Civilian Medical Technician to join our elite team at the United States Air Force Academy to ensure the medical readiness of our future military leaders, active-duty personnel, and their families, while enjoying the premier stability and benefits of federal service in Colorado Springs.

Established on April 1, 1954, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, trains cadets for service in the Air Force and Space Force. Responsibilities

Duties

1. Clinical Laboratory Testing & Analysis

  • Performs highly complex diagnostic testing across multiple laboratory specialties (including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology) in strict compliance with CLIA, CAP, and Air Force Medical Service (AFMS) quality standards.

  • Evaluates patient specimens to deliver precise, timely diagnostic data that directly influences clinical decision-making for over 4,000 Academy Cadets and thousands of active-duty and beneficiary patients.

  • Safely handles, processes, and tracks clinical specimens using strict chain-of-custody protocols, maintaining zero-error accuracy in specimen identification.

2. STAT Chemistry & Automated Analyzers

  • Operates, calibrates, and troubleshoots advanced, computerized automated chemistry analyzers to deliver rapid-turnaround critical and STAT diagnostic results.

  • Analyzes biochemical markers with absolute precision, prioritizing urgent requests to support emergency interventions and acute clinical triage.

  • Monitors real-time analyzer metrics and quality control (QC) runs to immediately identify and resolve instrument drift or calibration anomalies.

3. Advanced Hematology & Bodily Fluid Analysis

  • Performs expert manual microscopic reviews of peripheral blood smears to evaluate, identify, and verify complex cellular morphologies and hematologic abnormalities.

  • Conducts meticulous manual cell counts and biochemical evaluations on sensitive bodily fluids (e.g., synovial, cerebrospinal, and pleural fluids) with unwavering accuracy.

  • Executes and interprets critical coagulation profiles and platelet function studies to support pre-surgical screenings, trauma response, and ongoing anticoagulant therapy monitoring.

4. Bacteriology & Microbiology Processing

  • Inoculates, incubates, and isolates bacterial cultures from diverse clinical sites using strict aseptic techniques and established microbiological protocols.

  • Identifies potential pathogens through gram staining, morphological examination, and biochemical testing to rapidly guide targeted antimicrobial therapies.

  • Strictly adheres to biosafety level (BSL-2) containment protocols, ensuring a safe laboratory environment during high-risk specimen processing.

5. Quality Assurance, Correlation, & Reporting

  • Reviews, correlates, and validates multi-disciplinary laboratory data to ensure clinical plausibility before releasing results to the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

  • Generates comprehensive, clear, and compliant laboratory reports, immediately flagging and communicating critical panic values directly to ordering providers.

  • Actively participates in external proficiency testing and peer-review audits to maintain the laboratory’s top-tier accreditation status.

Qualifications

US Citizenship required

 

Must hold and maintain an active professional certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) from:

  • The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

  • The American Medical Technologists (AMT)

  • OR an equivalent credentialing registry formally recognized by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)).
